The thumb screw of the mount can be loosened and the entire unit may be moved out of the weather or traffic and into the protection of the cabin.   I made the attachment block from a 2 X 4  5 inches long.  I cut the backside to fit the curve of the companionway.  I didn't want to add holes to the boat so I attached the wood with Bondo (auto body filler).  I scored and drilled the back side to add surface area and bonded the wood to the fiberglass and left it sit until it had cured well.
The transducer was put in the forward floatation locker.  I ground a flat spot about four inches ahead of the keel bulge (the yellowish area) in the locker.  I found numerous pieces of steel shot imbedded in the resin.  I used a fine point tool to pick out the metal around the transducers location.  Luckily this area has a good build up of resin.  I ground it down until I had removed most of the pock marks and made a good flat mounting area.  I used silicone sealer as a test bond.  The on the water test showed the units to work perfectly.  So well I'll be leaving the silicone.

"I bought an adjustable mounting system  www.ram-mount.com  from West Marine which allowed me to mount both the Depth Sounder and the GPS.
