A problem I've had with quarterberths is that they're wide enough for the body, but not for the inboard arm. The M17 in particular is pretty narrow, and laying in it my right arm hangs out in space. The forepeak will be filled with kids and a long suffering wife, so I needed to create some sort of platform to support my right arm.

I considered a wood shelf of some kind, but really wanted something that would stow away. I also wanted to avoid something that needed to be strong enough for kids to stand on. I have about a half dozen old sails laying around the house, used for sunshades in the back yard and occasionally as a trampoline. I decided to use one of them.

[Update: this solution worked, but only kind of. Getting the tensions right was surprisingly hard and it was a bit of a pain to set up. It also moved. I replaced it with a storage box that doubled as a berth extension.]
